Best Spots to Propose in Garden of the Gods, Colorado Springs

Bride-to-be smiling with engagement ring at Garden of the Gods Colorado

If you’re dreaming of a proposal framed by soaring red rocks and the blue silhouette of Pikes Peak, Garden of the Gods is where love feels bigger than both time and place. Free to enter, open year-round, and endlessly photogenic, this Colorado Springs landmark has become one of my favorite backdrops for couples ready to say yes.

Over the years, I’ve photographed proposals here in golden sunsets, under passing rain clouds, in the quiet hush of sunrise, and even in secret corners where no one else wandered by. Whether you want an intimate surprise or a couples session that blooms into a proposal, here’s everything you need to know, from the best spots and times of day to hidden gems, local tips, and what to do after the ring slips on.

Why Choose Garden of the Gods for Your Proposal

  • Iconic red rock formations with views of Pikes Peak

  • Free access and open all year

  • Accessible trails alongside more secluded paths

  • Minutes from downtown Colorado Springs for post-proposal celebrations

Do You Need a Permit for a Garden of the Gods Proposal?

Unlike many Colorado parks, Garden of the Gods does not require a special use permit for proposals or photography. This simplicity is part of its charm, you don’t need paperwork to create a memory here.

That said, be mindful: drones aren’t allowed, and the park is open to everyone, so planning for crowds and timing is key.

How to Plan a Stress-Free Proposal at Garden of the Gods

  • Arrive early to secure parking and beat the crowds

  • Bring a blanket or umbrella in case weather turns, Colorado is unpredictable

  • Keep timing flexible; storms often pass quickly

  • Work with a local photographer who knows the angles, the light, and how to stay hidden when it matters

When Is the Best Time to Propose at Garden of the Gods?

Spring: Fresh green trees and soft light.

Summer: Golden light with wildflowers and also dealing with the occasional sudden afternoon storm.

Fall: Crisp air, autumn colors, and less haze in the sky and getting a bit chillt.

Winter: Snow-dusted rocks look like powdered sugar on fire.

Sunrise: The rocks glow like embers when the first light hits, and the park is quiet. Cold mornings are worth the privacy.

Sunset: Fiery skies and warm tones as the sun dips, breathtaking, but expect more people. Weekdays are easier than weekends.

Weekdays vs. Weekends: Parking lots fill quickly on Saturdays and Sundays, especially in spring and fall. Weekdays give you more space and calm.

The Best Spots to Propose in Garden of the Gods

High Point Overlook: Panoramic views, especially at sunset. Arrive early, parking fills fast.

Three Graces Plaza: Indiana Jones vibes with tall spires. Best for sunrise to avoid crowds.

Balanced Rock: Playful, dramatic, and popular with tourists. Works best early morning or weekdays.

South Garden / Gateway Rocks: Iconic formations close to the main lot. Best for a sunset stroll on a weeknight.

Hidden Overlooks: My personal favorites are the ones I keep tucked away for my clients, secluded spots where the world feels like it’s yours alone. These are the places I photographed Cade & Nicky’s sunset proposal and Kyle & Raquel’s surprise proposal. Quiet, private, and breathtaking.

Why Hire a Local Photographer for Your Proposal

Proposals last only seconds, but photos keep the memory alive forever. My role isn’t just clicking the shutter. I help with maps, timing, and hiding in plain sight when needed. Sometimes I’m tucked into the rocks pretending to photograph the landscape; sometimes I’m a “tourist” until the moment arrives.

I carry the nerves for you so you can just breathe, love, and ask the question. When it’s over, I guide you through portraits that capture the joy spilling out of you both.
