Colorado Springs Maternity Photographer at Garden of the Gods

Jennifer and Brandon booked my maternity and newborn bundle so we could start building trust and connection before their little one even arrived. Their maternity session at Garden of the Gods was relaxed and warm, set against red rock formations and soft golden light.

From choosing the best timing for Jennifer’s growing bump to guiding her through wardrobe options, this session was about more than photos, it was about creating space to feel calm, cared for, and excited for what’s next.

A Golden Hour Session With Jennifer + Brandon

There’s something sacred about this chapter, the waiting, the quiet anticipation, the way love shifts and expands before your baby even arrives. Jennifer and Brandon stepped into this space with so much grace and tenderness, booking my maternity and newborn bundle so we could start building connection before their little one was here.

For their maternity session, we chose Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs, a place where the red rock formations stand like sentinels against the evening sky, wrapping everything in warm, golden light. It was one of those evenings where time slowed down and all that mattered was the two of them and the little life growing between them.

Why Timing Matters for Maternity Photos

One of the biggest questions expecting parents have is, “When should we schedule our maternity session?” The truth is, it’s different for everyone. Jennifer started showing later, so we worked together to find the timing that felt best for her, when her belly was beautifully showing, but she still felt comfortable and at ease moving through the session.

That’s one of my favorite parts of this work: guiding you through those details so you can show up feeling prepared and confident.

Choosing the Right Outfit

Wardrobe is one of the biggest pieces of the puzzle for maternity photos. Jennifer tried on several dresses before finally finding “the one”, a soft, flowing Anthropologie piece that hit just right and made her feel beautiful.

I love helping clients with wardrobe decisions. From suggesting colors that complement our location to helping you figure out what feels authentic for you, it’s all part of creating a space where you can relax and feel good in your own skin.

Why Garden of the Gods Is Perfect for Maternity Sessions

Garden of the Gods is an iconic location for a reason: the sweeping red rocks, easy access, and panoramic views make it a dream backdrop for maternity photography. It’s perfect for couples who want dramatic Colorado beauty without a long hike or challenging terrain, especially helpful if you’re late in pregnancy and want a simple, relaxed experience.

Why Clients Love the Maternity + Newborn Bundle

Booking your maternity and newborn sessions together is more than a discount (though that’s nice, too). It’s about building trust and connection before your baby is even born. When we’ve already spent time together creating beautiful maternity photos, walking into your newborn session feels natural and calm, no pressure, no awkwardness, just an extension of a relationship we’ve already built.

Jennifer and Brandon loved knowing they wouldn’t have to scramble to find a photographer in those first hazy weeks. They had everything arranged ahead of time, leaving them free to simply enjoy those first precious days with their baby and I can’t wait to be there for it all.

Planning Your Own Maternity Session?

If you’re looking for a Colorado Springs maternity photographer who will help guide you on timing, wardrobe, and location, and create a space where you can simply be present with your growing family, I’d love to work with you.

Outdoor Family Photography in Colorado Springs

When Victoria and Andrew returned to Colorado Springs with their one-year-old son, Noah, they brought more than luggage, they brought a story full of meaning, growth, and quiet joy. Years ago, I documented their elopement at Garden of the Gods. This time, we met in the golden foothills of Cheyenne Mountain State Park to honor their next chapter: parenthood.

This post is more than just a glimpse into a heartfelt family session; it boasts a few ideas for vacationing families who want a meaningful, low-stress experience during their trip to Colorado Springs. If you're looking for kid-friendly outdoor locations, slow moments, and a photographer who meets your family where you are, this one’s for you.

A Slow, Connected Session for Vacationing Families

If you’re planning a trip to Colorado Springs with your people, this is your reminder that a slow, grounded photography session can be one of the most meaningful ways to honor it. When Victoria and Andrew reached out to let me know they were coming back to Colorado, with their one-year-old son, Noah, I was immediately in. Years ago, I photographed their elopement at Garden of the Gods. Just the two of them, wild and in love. This time, we met at Cheyenne Mountain State Park, with Noah toddling between them, curls bouncing, stillness turning to laughter by the end.

Why I Love This Spot for Traveling Families

Cheyenne Mountain State Park sits tucked against the foothills on the southwest side of town. It’s one of my favorite places for family sessions, especially for those visiting from out of state. We can start earlier here thanks to the way the light falls against the mountain ridge, and the trails are mellow, which means no hiking uphill in dress shoes or trying to coax toddlers into carriers.

It’s beautiful, accessible, and quiet. And when you’re on vacation, juggling nap schedules and unfamiliar routines, that kind of ease really matters.

The Way Connection Builds When You Let It

When we met in the parking lot, Noah was quiet and unsure. I gave him space. No rush, no pressure, just letting him take it all in while he stayed tucked close to his parents. Andrew gently brushed Noah’s curls from his face. Victoria scooped him up and swayed. These small moments, subtle, sacred, are what I live for.

And by the end? Full-belly giggles. That kind of soft unfolding doesn’t happen on command. It comes when kids feel safe enough to open up. That’s why I don’t believe in forcing smiles, I believe in holding space.

From Elopement to Parenthood

Getting to photograph this family again felt like standing in a circle that had gently expanded. From elopement to parenthood, from just the two of them to a trio, the love they carry hasn’t changed—it’s just grown wider.

Watching Noah move between them, seeing how they meet him with calm and curiosity, reminded me how deeply powerful these everyday moments are. The way you hold each other matters. The way your child lights up when you whisper something only they understand, that’s the magic I want to preserve for you.

Making Photos Part of the Journey (Not a Disruption)

Family photos on vacation don’t have to feel chaotic. I know how tricky it is to plan anything when you're out of your usual rhythm, bedtimes get weird, snacks are off, naps don’t happen. My job is to make the session feel like an exhale. A pause in the noise. A gentle remembering of what matters most.

If you’re planning a trip to Colorado Springs and want to mark this season with something that feels real and rooted, I’d love to help you do that.

While You're Exploring the Springs…

If you're traveling with littles, here are a few nearby spots families love (and that pair beautifully with a photo session at Cheyenne Mountain State Park):

Want to Book While You’re Here?

If you're traveling through Colorado Springs and want to create space for your family to be seen, really seen, in this season of your life, I’d be honored to meet you there. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or returning to a place that feels like home, we’ll create something that reflects who you are and how you love.

Rainy Crystal Creek Reservoir Elopement on Pikes Peak

Zoie and Alex traveled from Missouri to elope at Crystal Creek Reservoir on Pikes Peak. The day brought rain, hail, and unexpected pivots, but also deep connection, incredible light, and a grounded ceremony by the water. With tattoos, custom Chucks, and a close group of friends, their celebration was joyful and heartfelt from beginning to end.

From weather challenges to intimate moments (like Zoie’s locket holding her father’s ashes), this elopement was rich in emotion, meaning, and the kind of trust that makes beautiful photos possible, no matter what the forecast says.

Zoie and Alex came to Colorado from Missouri to get married on the side of a mountain, with their people, their playlists, and a whole lot of heart.

They had a permit in hand and a plan in mind… an outdoor elopement at Crystal Creek Reservoir, just off the Pikes Peak Highway near Colorado Springs. The lake behind them, clouds overhead, and everyone they love standing close. Sounds like the perfect day, right?

Then, Colorado did what it does best, and gave us some turbulence on our afternoon plans.

A Day That Didn't Go to Plan

The rain rolled in early, quiet and steady at first, and then harder. By the time we were all gathering at the reservoir, it was hailing. Thunder, cold wind, a total shift in what the day was supposed to be.

We tucked into the tiny gift shop to regroup. The kind of space that smells like postcards and sunscreen, filled with strangers trying to find dry places to stand.

Zoie and Alex stayed calm. No panic. No drama. Just patience.

We were going over plan B’s and C’s and at one point the shop manager said, “You can do it in here if you need to, we’ll close down.” Oh heck no. I wasn’t going to let them get married in a gift shop when we had the entire beautiy of Pikes Peak around us. We waited. We all know how Colorado can roll. Weather moves, quickly.

Making Space for What the Day Wanted

While we waited, I pulled them aside for a few photos, just the two of them. Zoie wore a locket with her father’s ashes around her neck, and Alex looked at her like she was the only person in the world. Jeezer, friends. What a love.

We found a quiet rhythm there, just for a moment. In the middle of the chaos, the rain, the uncertainty of what might unfold, they had that calm.

Eventually, the storm eased up. Not gone, but gentler. Enough that we could step outside and make our way down to the water. The chairs stayed in the vehicles that brought them, with the ground too wet to use. No one minded. Everyone just stood close and showed up. Each person fiding their spot on the shore, Pikes Peak large and snow-capped in front of them.

The Ceremony

Their friend married them by the edge of Crystal Creek Reservoir, with the mountains quiet in the distance and clouds hanging low.

No aisle. No arch. Just love and soft rain, and people pulled in close.

Zoie and Alex wore custom Chucks. Their crew was tattooed, wild, and joyful, a chosen family kind of crowd. The kind that shows up big, supports loud, and loves hard. The kind of group you’d want behind you in any kind of weather.

What the Storm Gave Us

This spot is usually a hard one for light, too harsh during the day, too backlit from the west. But that storm? It gave us cloud cover. Texture. Soft light. Color. Mood.

What was supposed to be a sunny mountain wedding turned into something deeper. More honest. The kind of day you remember not because it was perfect, but because everyone rolled with the imperfection and leaned on each other to find that silver lining.

If you’re planning an elopement in Colorado Springs, or looking at Pikes Peak wedding locations, this is one of those spots that can be as moody as it is magical.

Not every elopement goes to plan. But some of them become more than you expected.

Zoie and Alex didn’t get the weather they were hoping for. But they got something better: intimacy, presence, and a reminder that sometimes love shows up strongest when nothing else is going right.

If you're dreaming of a wedding that feels like you, no matter what the forecast says, I'm here for it. Let's plan something real, wild, and fully yours.

Mother and Daughter Photos at Goose Island Bridge, Lake City

Karissa and Saylor have trusted me with their memories more times than I can count. This time, we ventured all the way to Lake City, Colorado, for a session on Goose Island Bridge, a hidden gem stretching across Lake San Cristobal, now famous thanks to TikTok. Karissa planned the session as part of her birthday adventure, renting a cabin and making it a whole weekend for just the two of them.

We wandered the bridge, skipped stones, and soaked in mountain light that felt like pure Colorado magic. The connection between them is what keeps me coming back to sessions like these. Goose Island Bridge is definitely a spot I’d return to in a heartbeat for anyone dreaming of photos that feel wild, quiet, and deeply true.

I’ve photographed Karissa and Saylor so many times, I’ve lost count. It’s always the two of them, Karissa and her daughter, Saylor, whose hair is beautiful and wild and whose expressions change in an instant from serious to goofy to pure joy.

They’re one of those families who pour so much care into the experience of photos. It’s not just about pretty pictures for them, it’s about carving out time together and making memories that feel special.

A Trip to Lake City

This time, Karissa sent me a video she’d found online, a bridge stretching across a lake in the middle of the mountains. Goose Island Bridge on Lake San Cristobal, tucked away near Lake City, Colorado. It’s become a bit of a hidden gem on TikTok, and Karissa wanted to go there for her birthday week.

She rented a little cabin for the two of them, planning a whole weekend around the session. Originally, we’d hoped to go earlier, but the bridge was closed. Up there, the lake can still be frozen into June, and geese nest out on the island until the snow melts off the peaks.

So we shifted plans and waited an extra week. Which was absolutely perfect timing.

Wandering Lake City

Lake City is about four and a half hours from Colorado Springs (where I live near the base of Pikes Peak). I hit the road early that day because I wanted time to explore before the shoot.

I ended up at Southern Vittles, sitting on the porch under a row of flags, eating catfish that was honestly way better than I’d expected. I wandered into a few shops downtown, grabbed buttery shortbread and the best toffee from Kennedy Dry Goods, and got an amazing chai at Cafe 98.

It’s one of my favorite things about traveling for sessions, getting to discover new little pockets of Colorado I’d never otherwise see. Taking it all in. The people. The tastes, smells, and all the sights. Being in the mountains is a gift, and I am learning each day to hold it tighter and tighter.

Scouting the Bridge

After lunch, I made my way to Goose Island Bridge.

I walked the trail over and over, working out where I’d start the session and how I’d move us around to keep the light right as the sun dropped. It’s one of the tasks of being a photographer I thoroughly enjoy and it feels like a quiet ritual after all these years.

Even though I’d never shot there before, the light danced the way I’d hoped it would. Dipping down at just the right time, spilling onto the mountains behind but giving us plenty of that lovely even light that I love so much. The perfect lighting was another gift that I got to give myself. I knew the light and it’s from spending a decade learning how to read landscapes and skies.

The Session

Karissa and Saylor arrived later that evening. Karissa borrowed a dress I’d brought along, a soft, flowing piece that looked incredible on her. Saylor gave it her stamp of approval almost immediately and we were off!

We spent the first half of our time together chasing the light over a chunk of land that connected to Goose Island via the bridge. We made our way towards the bridge, which was the highlight, especially for Saylor. The bridge itself felt solid but had a gentle sway underfoot, the lake below catching streaks of soft evening color.

Saylor was full of energy, bouncing lightly as she walked, her hair shifting with every step, eyes lighting up each time she looked back at her mom or me.

We wandered along the bridge and the small island, pausing to skip stones and explore little pockets of trees and open sky. There was laughter, a few quiet moments where Karissa pulled Saylor in close, and a sense that they were completely present there together, away from everything else.

Sessions like this are why I keep doing what I do. It’s the long drives, the new places, the people who trust me enough to go on an adventure, and the tiny in-between moments that feel like real life distilled into something tangible.

Why I’d Go Back

Karissa and Saylor stayed in Lake City that night to keep soaking up their little getaway. I drove home under a darkening sky, tired but full.

Goose Island Bridge and Lake San Cristobal are places I’d return to without question. The views are unreal, the colors shift by the minute, and there’s this quiet hush that makes you feel small in the best way. Not to mention the folks that live there and the businesses they run. Yummy food and treats for days, friends.

If you’re dreaming of photos somewhere that feels wild, remote, and full of possibility, I’d be back there in a heartbeat.

Ready for an adventure that feels entirely yours? Let’s talk about Lake City, or wherever your story wants to unfold.

Connected Extended Family Session Amid Rainy Skies in Cheyenne Canyon

Carolyn’s extended family traveled to Colorado Springs for her grandson’s wedding but gathered in Cheyenne Canyon to honor something deeper: the quiet, beautiful bonds of love that hold them together. Despite rainy weather and muddy trails, their session overflowed with tenderness and connection.

Amidst her journey through breast cancer treatment, Carolyn chose to create images that celebrate how much her family loves, laughs, and supports one another. This blog shares a glimpse into their story and the gentle, resilient spirit they radiate.

Some families stand close for a photograph. And some families melt into one another, an intricate weave of hands, laughter, glances, and gentle touches. Families who don’t just pose together, but who exist together in a kind of soft orbit, connected by invisible threads of devotion.

Carolyn’s family is that kind of family.

They traveled from out of state to gather in Colorado Springs, drawn together partly by the joy of Carolyn’s grandson Michael’s wedding, but also by something deeper. A desire to hold close what matters most. Earlier this year, Carolyn was diagnosed with breast cancer. She’s now in the middle of radiation treatment, carrying both strength and vulnerability in the same breath. Amidst all of this, she chose to have these photographs made, to honor the love that holds her family together, even in uncertain seasons.

Threads of Closeness

Before the session, I’d sent Carolyn my usual questionnaire. It’s full of gentle questions, not only about logistics, but about hopes and heart. Her answer to one question stayed with me as I planned our time together:

As silly as it sounds, just the closeness between us and how much we love each other, how much fun we have together, and how much we enjoy being around each other, although it’s total chaos most of the time.

It doesn’t sound silly at all. It sounds like the entire reason I do what I do.

The Dance of Light, Mud, and Love

On the day of our session, Colorado’s skies were caught in a restless cycle of rain, leaving the earth soaked and the trails slick with mud. I’d been watching the forecast like a hawk, quietly confident we’d find our window of dry skies. When we arrived at our cozy spot in Cheyenne Canyon, the air was cool and soft, the clouds lifting just enough for light to spill across the hillsides.

The landscape offered new challenges: puddles, hidden mud patches, paths transformed into small creeks. We pivoted, found new pockets of beauty, and leaned into the unexpected. Sometimes the most meaningful photographs happen precisely because plans change.

And through it all, Carolyn and Phil stood surrounded by the people who adore them: their children, Anna, Philip, and Amy, and their grandchildren, each carrying a piece of this family’s story. There were moments of gentle quiet and moments of joyful chaos. Grandkids tucked themselves under arms. Siblings teased and laughed. Carolyn reached for Phil’s hand, the simple gesture of decades spent side by side. Amid the mud and the shifting skies, there was an undeniable tenderness in every glance and touch.

Families Who Lean Into the Messy, Beautiful Whole

These are the families I love to photograph, the ones who don’t shy away from closeness. The ones who know that love is often found in small, ordinary gestures: the way arms wrap around shoulders, the way eyes soften when they look at one another, the way a laugh erupts from the center of the chest and spills outward.

Carolyn’s family reminded me once again why I do this work. It’s not simply about taking photos. It’s about preserving the feeling of belonging, the proof that even in seasons of hardship, love remains steadfast and bright.

Carolyn, thank you for inviting me into your family’s story. Your courage, your warmth, and your fierce love shine through every frame. You are deeply loved, and it shows.

Romantic Sunset Couples Session in Lake George CO

A golden sunset, mountain views, and the sweetest young love—this Lake George couples session for Ivie and Nick was full of heart. From wildflower crowns to first-time dips, it captured their story beautifully.

Nick and Ivie are just beginning their journey together, and it was an honor to photograph them in this quiet moment of togetherness. Their connection, supported by family and rooted in trust, shines through every frame.

A Sweet Sunset Session for Ivie and Nick

When Nick's mom first reached out to book this session, I could already feel how loved these two were. Ivie and Nick are young, fresh into their college years, but the commitment and tenderness between them runs deep. Nick is currently attending West Point in New York, and when he was accepted, his family relocated to Colorado Springs. Ivie, choosing love and a leap of faith, moved with them. She's now living with his family and attending college here, which says so much about the trust and connection they've built, not just with each other, but across their families, too.

There’s something so special about photographing couples at the very beginning of their story. Everything feels fresh, tender, and full of possibility. This wasn’t just a milestone session, it was a love letter to who they are right now, and to everything they’re building together. And that’s something I feel so honored to witness.

Escaping the Storms for Mountain Calm

We chose Lake George for their session, tucked about an hour and a half up into the mountains from Colorado Springs. While the city had been drowning in one of the rainiest stretches I’ve ever seen, we managed to slip away from it, trading grey skies for glowing light and stillness. That escape felt like a gift. The air was clear and cool. The lake shimmered just enough. The mountains stood tall behind them like quiet witnesses.

Ivie had asked for water and mountains, and Lake George gave us both, with wide open space to run and play, soft fields that caught the light just right, and the kind of hush that makes it easy to sink into each other. It’s one of my favorite places for a reason.

Mountains, Wildflowers, and a First-Time Dip

Ivie wore cream and soft tones, grounded with an earthy wildflower crown she found on Etsy, a delicate touch that felt both whimsical and grounded, perfect for the open fields and lake views. (If you're looking for a similar crown for your own session, here’s one I love on Etsy.)

One of my favorite moments from the session was when I asked Nick to dip her. He laughed and said he never had before, so I walked him through it, step by step. And there, in the field with the mountains glowing behind them, he dipped her for the very first time. The way Ivie beamed, it was pure magic. That single moment, caught forever in golden light, felt like a promise, a beginning, a little piece of joy they’ll carry with them.

Sessions like these are a reminder of how sweet young love can be when it’s given the space to grow, supported and held by the people around it. I can’t wait to photograph them again someday, maybe for a milestone, maybe just because. Whatever it is, I know it’ll be full of heart.

Planning a Session at Lake George?

It’s one of my favorite locations for a reason, mountain views, open space, and gorgeous light almost every time. If you’re dreaming of a golden-hour session in the mountains, I’d love to help bring it to life.

Colorado Springs Lifestyle Newborn Session at Home

There’s something so special about newborn sessions at home, no rush, no pressure, just your family unfolding in real time. For Kaylee and Chris, inviting me into their Colorado Springs home to document those early days with baby Theodore felt like such an honor. With beautiful light, woodland nursery details, and their pup weaving through the frames, every moment felt soft and grounded.

From cozy snuggles to heartfelt grandparent connections, this session was full of quiet beauty. Come take a peek inside their space and experience the love, the light, and a sweet little tradition passed down from Chris’s heritage that made me smile for days.

Sacred is being invited into someone’s home during those early newborn days, the ones that feel suspended in time, where everything slows down and sharpens all at once. This in-home newborn session in Colorado Springs with Kaylee, Chris, and their baby boy, Theodore, was filled with that exact kind of quiet magic. The kind that wraps around you like a favorite blanket and lingers long after you’ve gone.

I first met Kaylee and Chris on a winter day last year, photographing their extended family in the stillness of Strawberry Fields down in Cheyenne Canyon. It was the kind of session that felt like a warm pocket of time, sweet, connected, full of laughter and love. At the very end, almost like a whisper, they shared that Kaylee was pregnant. A few months later, they reached back out… and this time, I got to step into their home and into this next season of their story.

A Nursery Full of Light and Love

The moment I walked in, I could feel how deeply thought-out every detail was. Their nursery was full of earthy tones, soft textures, and woodland animals lovingly placed here and there like little guardians of the space. The light poured through the windows in just the right way, and while I always take time to scout for light and pockets of shadow when I arrive, their room held everything we needed: warmth, calm, and space to simply be.

Theodore was still tiny, folded into himself, sleepy and soft and new. We took our time, moving slowly, pausing often, letting the session unfold gently. When I first got there, I noticed a small patch on his forehead and quietly prepared myself to edit around it later. Ha, jokes on me! It wasn’t dry skin at all, it was a tiny, damp square of paper towel, placed there by Chris’s mom and dad, a sweet tradition from his heritage meant to ease newborn hiccups. I laughed, softened by the intimacy of a remedy passed down through generations, and how these little pieces of who we are show up in the most tender ways.

Generations, Chairs, and the Heart of Home

Chris’s parents were visiting and joined us for the session, another layer of love folded into the morning. His mother gently asked if I could take a photo of Grandpa holding Theodore in the nursery chair, and I’m so glad she did. There’s something about that image, this strong, quiet man holding his grandson in the soft light, that holds a kind of reverence I can’t quite put into words.

And of course, their dog made sure to be part of it all. She padded gently through the room, curled up close, and stole her own sweet moments in the frame. Sessions like this remind me again and again: family looks like so many things. A new baby. A pup who’s been there through it all. Parents who show up to witness the next chapter. A home that holds it all together.

Why I’ll Always Love In-Home Newborn Sessions

These at-home newborn sessions are some of my favorite to photograph, because they’re so honest. You don’t have to pack up the baby, or worry about forgetting something, or rush to get anywhere on time. You just get to be where you are, with the people you love most, while I move quietly through the space and make sure you remember what it felt like to be here.

To Kaylee and Chris, thank you for letting me witness this part of your story. It was soft and true and full of presence. And that will always be enough.

Nostalgic Family Session in Colorado Springs Cul-de-Sac

This nostalgic family session took place at the future home site of Laura and Dustin in Colorado Springs. Surrounded by blush tones, deep connection, and wide-open possibility, we documented a moment in the in-between, before the house, but full of heart.

Laura, who splits her time between Colorado and Oregon, where she owns Luxus Aesthetics in Happy Valley, has trusted me to capture her family for years. Every time, it’s a reminder of how meaningful this work is and how love shows up in the little things.

Nostalgic Family Photos at Their Future Home

Some sessions feel like a snapshot in time, and some feel like a bookmark in a bigger story. This one was both. Laura and Dustin are in the process of building their forever home in Colorado Springs, and before the first foundation was even poured, Laura had the idea to create a session here. To mark this space. To hold it close before the noise and dust and construction. Before it becomes something finished and polished, it gets to be this: wild, open, full of potential.

We’ve worked together a few times now, and it’s always a joy. Laura splits her time between here and Oregon, where she owns Luxus Aesthetics in Happy Valley (she has an office in Colorado Springs too). She’s an expert in skincare and beauty, Botox, fillers, Sculptra, and more, and it shows. Every time I see her, she’s put together in a way that feels effortlessly elegant. But more than that, she brings heart. She shows up with her kids in such an intentional, grounded way, and it sets the tone for everything.

Reschedules, Ridgelines, and Real Life

The session itself wasn’t without its hiccups, weather delays, calendar shifts, and a hilarious scouting adventure on my end. When Laura told me you could see the mountains from the ridge behind the property, I decided to check it out myself. Let’s just say… I bushwhacked my way through cactus and yuccas, climbed up this intense slope, and when I got to the top, it opened into someone else’s backyard, complete with a giant dumpster. (So no, we didn’t shoot there.)

Instead, we stayed grounded on the lot itself, which ended up being just right. Nestled at the end of a cul-de-sac, the space felt quiet and safe, a little pocket of calm in the middle of a neighborhood coming to life. And there’s something symbolic about that too, the idea of choosing the unbuilt, the imperfect, the becoming. That’s what this session was about.

Celebrating the Love That Already Lives Here

From the start, Laura had a vision. The soft blush tones she chose aren’t typically my go-to palette, but she just gets it, her styling is always spot-on, and she makes colors sing in a way that feels timeless. The kids were, as always, incredibly sweet with one another, gentle, affectionate, curious. Watching them interact feels like watching real love in motion. And the way they light up around their mom? Pure gold.

There were some harder moments, too, parenting always brings those. But the heart of this session wasn’t about perfection. It was about presence. About saying, “This is us, right now. This is where we begin the next chapter.” And to me, that’s the kind of storytelling that matters most.

These images feel like a quiet little time capsule, something to look back on once the walls go up, the furniture is in, and the everyday rhythm of life begins in their new space. They'll remember the dirt under their feet, the way the sun dipped low behind the ridge, and how it felt to stand together in the middle of a dream taking root.

Ready to Book Your Family Session?

Whether you’re honoring a new chapter, making memories in a favorite spot, or simply wanting to press pause on the chaos, family sessions with me are slow, connected, and built around what matters most to you.

Colorado Springs Family Session on Air Force Academy Land

Cassidy’s graduation called for something special—a family session wrapped in love, sunlight, and celebration. We explored a beautiful, tucked-away spot on Air Force Academy land in Colorado Springs (accessible to those with military ID!) and soaked up golden hour in the mountains. Her son Solomon brought all the expressions and sweet mama snuggles, and we ended the evening with magic in the meadow.

A Snuggly Family Session at the Air Force Academy

Celebrating a milestone with Cassidy, Ryan, and Solomon

Okay, friends, this one was special. Cassidy had just finished her master’s degree (cue the confetti), and instead of a cap-and-gown photoshoot, she wanted something even better: a cozy, joy-filled session with her little family. We made our way onto Air Force Academy land in Colorado Springs (a rare gem of a spot!) to celebrate this huge life moment with snuggles, sunshine, and a whole lotta love.

Now, a little heads-up: the Air Force Academy recently changed their entry rules. You have to have a military ID to access the property now, guest passes are a no-go. Which is a bummer, because this place has so much to offer. But if you’re one of my folks with an ID? Yes, yes, yes, we can totally go here and soak it all up.

A Tiny Old Soul, A Mama’s Joy

Let’s talk about Solomon for a second, this sweet boy was giving “wise old man” energy in the best possible way. His expressions? Everything. From the big-eyed stares to the smirky little grins, this kid gave me every face in the book, and then melted into his mama like only toddlers can. You could feel the bond between them, and it’s exactly the kind of thing I live to document.

We started out by tucking ourselves away in the trees, chasing shade and soft light. There was this beautiful flowering bush that felt like a secret garden moment. Later, as the sun began to dip, we moved into an open meadow, and that’s when the magic happened. Golden light spilled over the mountains like honey, wrapping everything in that dreamy, glowy feel that makes the images look like memories you can touch.

A Bonus Adventure at Hotel Polaris

Cassidy, Ryan, and I actually met at the brand-new Hotel Polaris (which is right outside the Academy gates), and I got to ride in with them. It felt like the beginning of a mini adventure, one of those sessions where you’re not just showing up to take photos, you’re making a little memory together. Even when we had to reschedule, Cassidy took it all in stride with the kind of grace and warmth that made everything flow. Beauty in the making, friends.

Celebrating More Than a Degree

This wasn’t just a family session. It was a celebration of hard work, growth, resilience, and love. It was about honoring not just the milestone Cassidy achieved, but the life and family she’s building along the way. The soft moments, the laughter in the trees, the wind in Solomon’s hair, the way Ryan looked at his wife, this is what it’s all about.

Cassidy, thank you for inviting me in to hold this chapter with you. I’m still smiling thinking about that sunlit meadow and the stories you’ll tell when you look back on these.

Whether you’re celebrating a milestone, just want to soak in your everyday magic, or have access to a dreamy location like this one, let’s make some photo magic together.

Whether you’re envisioning a private vow exchange on a mountain peak or an intimate ceremony surrounded by golden aspens, this guide covers everything you need to know, from self-solemnizing your marriage to picking the dreamiest locations. 🌿

As an elopement photographer and guide rooted in the heart of Colorado, I’m here to walk you through every step. If you’re ready to skip tradition and create a day that feels like coming home, dive into the full guide and start dreaming up your perfect Colorado elopement adventure.

Dreaming of a wedding day that feels as wild and true as your love story? Welcome to Colorado, the land where love runs free, the mountains stand witness, and your elopement becomes an unforgettable adventure. ✨

I’m Sandy, and around here, we do things a little differently, a little more heart, a little more soul, a lot less pressure. If you're wondering how to elope in Colorado, friend, you're in exactly the right place. Let’s dive in.

Why Eloping in Colorado Just Hits Different

Imagine standing on the edge of a golden alpine meadow, hand in hand with your love, with nothing but wide-open sky, soft winds, and a couple of marmots cheering you on.
No crowds. No timelines. No stress.

Colorado makes that possible.

  • Self-Solemnization: Here, you don’t need an officiant. You don’t even need witnesses if you don’t want them. In Colorado, you and your partner have everything you need to marry yourselves, just the two of you and the mountains as your witnesses. (And if you do want your dog to sign your license with a muddy paw print? Hell yes you can.)

  • LGBTQ+ Affirming: Love wins here, and I’m proud to live and work in a state that protects and honors that love at every level.

  • Scenery That'll Knock Your Socks Off: Whether you're dreaming of sun-drenched cliffs, golden aspens, snowy mountaintops, or deep forest hideaways, Colorado's got a vibe to match your heart.

Colorado Elopement Laws: The Easy Breezy Breakdown

When I say Colorado makes eloping easy, I mean easy. Here's what you need to know:

  • Marriage License: You can get married in any county and elope anywhere in Colorado, no need to match them up. Just roll into a county clerk’s office with your driver’s licenses (or passports), fill out a quick application, and walk out legal. Same-day service, baby.

  • No Witnesses Needed: That's right, you don't have to invite anyone you don't want to. Your ceremony can be 100% private, just the two of you. (Or you can roll deep and have your whole family sign. Your choice, always.)

  • Self-Solemnization: This isn’t some boring legal loophole, it’s a radical honoring of your autonomy. You can craft your vows, your ceremony, your sacred moment exactly how you want it, without any extra steps or paperwork.

  • Pet-Friendly Signing: Have a fur baby that's part of your family? They can "sign" your marriage license with an ink paw print. (I've seen it done, and yes, it made me cry.)

  • Cost: Most marriage licenses cost about $30. No blood tests. No waiting periods. No hoops. Just love.

Best Times of Year to Elope in Colorado

Okay, so here's the thing about Colorado, she’s got seasons like moods, and they all bring their own kind of magic. ✨

  • Summer (June-August): Long golden evenings, fields of wildflowers, mountain passes wide open. Ideal for hikers and adventure-seekers.

  • Fall (September-October): If you've ever wanted to say your vows under a cathedral of fiery aspens, this is your moment. Crisp air, golden trees, dreamy sunsets.

  • Winter (November-March): Snow-dusted vows, cozy cabin celebrations, or mountaintop ceremonies for my wild snow lovers.

  • Spring (April-May): Baby wildlife, fresh green meadows, uncrowded trails, though keep in mind the high country can still be snowy!

Where to Elope in Colorado

No matter your vibe, there’s a place here for you. Some of my faves?

  • Rocky Mountain National Park: Classic, sweeping views. Permit required (I’ll help you snag it).

  • Great Sand Dunes National Park: Ethereal, dreamlike landscapes you won’t believe exist here.

  • San Juan Mountains: Honestly? Jaw. Dropping. The wildest peaks, the deepest intimacy.

  • Garden of the Gods: Easy access but still SO stunning, crazy red rock formations against blue skies.

  • Hidden Gems: I have a whole location catalog packed with secret spots, because your day deserves somewhere as special as your love.

Psst, I also offer full custom location scouting for my couples, so if you want a totally off-the-beaten-path adventure? I'm your girl.

How I Help You Create the Elopement of Your Dreams

Choosing to elope isn’t just about skipping the big wedding, it’s about choosing yourself. Choosing your connection. Choosing your story. And I’m here to make sure your day reflects all of that magic.

  • Timeline Crafting: We build a slow, beautiful timeline around the natural light, your vision, and your activities, whether that's hiking a trail, sipping coffee by a lake, or dancing under the stars.

  • Customized Location Help: I'll help you pick the spot that feels like home to your love story — whether that's an iconic view or a hidden corner of the wild.

  • Planning Guide: All my couples receive an Elopement Planning Guide packed with everything you need to know: packing lists, activity ideas, local vendor recommendations, and tips for making your day stress-free.

  • Hands-On Support: From your first inquiry to your final gallery delivery, you’re not just "hiring a photographer." You’re gaining a guide, a teammate, and a hype woman who believes fiercely in your story.

What past couples are saying:

We do not live in Colorado and had no idea about the area, but she guided us to the perfect location for our elopement and was always available for questions or concerns leading up to our wedding day.
— K + M
My husband and I are from out of state so Sandy scheduled a video call with me so that we could hash out location details and such. She was incredibly knowledgeable about the location and made planning the elopement from 500 miles away (something that could’ve been extremely stressful) the easiest and happiest experience.
— T + C

Common Mistakes to Avoid When Eloping in Colorado

Because listen, friend — the wild beauty of Colorado will sweep you right off your feet… but a little prep goes a long way toward making sure your day stays dreamy instead of dicey.
Here’s a few common pitfalls I help my couples dodge:

  • Not Preparing for High Altitude: Colorado’s elevation is no joke, especially if you're coming from sea level. Altitude sickness can hit fast and hard, so plan to arrive a couple of days early to acclimate, hydrate like crazy, and take it slow on those first few hikes.

  • Forgetting About Permits: Some locations, especially in national parks and certain wilderness areas, require special permits for ceremonies and photography. It’s not a huge deal, but you don't want a park ranger crashing your vows. I guide all my couples through this process to keep it simple and stress-free.

  • Underestimating the Weather: Colorado weather is a moody little creature. 🌦 You might start the day with sunshine and end it with snow, even in June. Always have layers, backup plans, and the spirit of adventure tucked into your wedding day mindset.

  • Not Planning for Light: Light changes fast in the mountains, and when that golden hour hits? It’s pure magic. I build custom timelines for my couples to make sure we’re in the right place at the right time for those heart-melting, soul-soaring photos.

  • Trying to “Do It All”: This is your day to slow down, soak in the moment, and be with each other. You don't need a million activities stacked up. Focus on the few things that feel the most like you, and let the rest fall away.

Pro Tip:
When you work with me, you don’t have to keep all these details straight yourself. I’ll walk you through every step, every choice, every what-if — so you can just show up and live your love story fully.

More Words From Past Wild Hearts:

Rocky Mountain National Park Proposal Photographer

Sarah and Kenji traveled from Texas to Estes Park for a romantic mountain getaway, and a photo session to remember it by. What they didn’t expect was that their couples session would turn into a surprise proposal at Sprague Lake in the heart of Rocky Mountain National Park. With the original plan at Brainard Lake no longer an option due to seasonal closures, we quickly pivoted to one of my favorite hidden gems in RMNP, and it turned out to be the perfect backdrop for this once-in-a-lifetime moment.

This blog shares the full story of their spontaneous engagement, why Sprague Lake is such an ideal proposal spot, and how I help couples, especially those visiting from out of state, plan unforgettable photo experiences in the Colorado mountains. If you’re dreaming of popping the question during your vacation in Estes Park or Rocky Mountain National Park, this one’s for you.

A Surprise Proposal in Rocky Mountain National Park

Sarah and Kenji came all the way from Texas for a vacation in Estes Park, dreaming of the wild beauty only Rocky Mountain National Park can offer, and maybe just a few romantic photos to remember it by. What unfolded instead was a surprise proposal at Sprague Lake that none of us will ever forget. As a Colorado photographer who knows these trails like old friends, I helped guide them through a last-minute location pivot and witnessed one of the most heartfelt moments I’ve ever photographed. ✨

Sarah booked a session with me for their trip to Estes Park, dreamy Rocky Mountain vibes, romantic forest paths, snow-kissed peaks. Originally, we were aiming for Brainard Lake, one of my favorite tucked-away spots, but June in Colorado can still hold surprises of its own. When I scouted the area the day before, the gate was still locked. So we pivoted. Lucky for all of us, I’d been photographing a wedding the day before in Rocky Mountain National Park and had just spent time at Sprague Lake. I sent them some photos of the spot… and it was an immediate yes. So on June 11, we met at Sprague, not knowing just how special this evening would become.

Planning Around Nature’s Curveballs

Mountain sessions always come with a little “choose your own adventure” energy. But one of the biggest gifts I bring to the table is that I know these spots, where to go when Plan A is iced over, how to adjust when the weather turns or the gates don’t open. I’m always scouting, always watching light, always tuning in.

For Sarah and Kenji, that flexibility turned into a blessing. Sprague Lake gave us peaceful trails, reflections on still water, views that stretched and shimmered. And it gave Kenji a quiet pocket to pull me aside, whispering that he had a ring burning a hole in his pocket and he was ready to propose.

Vacationing in Estes Park? Let’s Make It Magical

Sarah had no idea. Like, no idea. She even packed an outfit change and thought nothing of it. I’d only spoken with Kenji briefly during our video consult (yes, all my couples get one so we can vibe and prep!) but hadn’t had a moment alone with him until he grabbed me in the parking lot, heart pounding. While she was adjusting, we quickly made a game plan. I helped him pick the perfect spot, tucked just far enough into the trees with that iconic lake view behind them.

When it happened… whew. The surprise on her face. The tears. The laughter. The YES. It was raw and real and filled with all that big love energy that makes my job the best in the world.

Why Sprague Lake is Perfect for a Proposal

Want to know why this spot worked so beautifully? Here's what you need to know:

  • No wedding permit required for photo sessions

  • Easy trail loop = accessibility without sacrificing views

  • Dreamy sunset light with water reflections + epic mountain views

  • Close to Estes Park, so perfect for vacationers

  • Bonus: it’s quiet, romantic, and feels tucked away

If you're planning a surprise proposal or engagement session in Colorado and don't know where to start, I’ve got you. This isn't just point-and-shoot photography. This is location scouting, timeline planning, emotional support, and storytelling.

Helping You Plan a Mountain Engagement Story

Here’s the thing about Rocky Mountain proposals: they’re intimate, personal, and yes, a little unpredictable. But when you’ve got someone by your side who knows the land, the light, and how to navigate the chaos with calm, the experience becomes unforgettable in the best way.

I help you choose the perfect spot. I guide you through the process. I capture the look on their face when they realize what’s happening. And I hold space for whatever unfolds after. Whether you’re dreaming of a surprise like Kenji’s or planning a mountaintop elopement with all the logistics dialed in, I’ve got your back.

Ready to Pop the Question in Colorado?

You don’t need to know every detail. You just need to know you love them, and you want the moment to feel like you. I’ll take care of the rest, from the permits (or lack thereof), to the Plan Bs, to the slow breath you take right before you drop to one knee.

Let’s create something wildly beautiful together.

In-Home Newborn Session in the Colorado Mountains

This cozy in-home newborn session in the Colorado mountains was the kind of slow, sacred magic that fills your chest and stays with you. I’ve photographed Laura and David through their journey into parenthood, from their maternity session, to Liv’s birth, to a handful of sweet family milestones since then, and this session welcoming baby Dante felt like coming home.

It was everything I love about lifestyle newborn photography: connection, presence, and a whole lot of love. Liv played DJ while Dante snuggled peacefully nearby. There were snacks, pet cuddles, and the kind of laughter that only happens when you’re completely at ease. This Colorado in-home session reminded me that newborn photography is about more than documenting a new baby, it’s about honoring a growing family in all its tender, wild beauty.

A Story Years in the Making

There’s something so sacred about being invited back. About being trusted to witness a family not just once, but over and over again as their story unfolds.

That’s what this lifestyle newborn session in the Colorado mountains felt like with Laura and David, like being welcomed back by dear friends. I’ve walked with them through their first pregnancy, the birth of their daughter Liv, and now, the arrival of baby Dante. And every time, I leave feeling full to the brim with gratitude.

A Cozy, Laid-Back Mountain Morning

Their home, tucked in the piney quiet of the mountains near Pine, Colorado, was warm and peaceful when I arrived. The sun spilled gently through the windows, Liv was upstairs showing me her favorite little DJ piano (and yes, I absolutely got a live concert), and baby Dante was snuggled nearby like a secret waiting to be discovered.

And this is what I love about in-home newborn photography, it’s unhurried. It’s intimate. It’s filled with the kind of quiet beauty you can’t stage. David was still getting ready, Laura was upstairs putting the finishing touches on, and I was already in the middle of documenting what makes this season so special: the in-between moments.

Making Space for Siblings to Shine

At one point, I slipped a tiny 3D-printed axolotl into Liv’s hand, a little gift I brought for her. Because when a new baby arrives, older siblings deserve to feel celebrated, too. Her whole face lit up. It’s a small thing, but those moments of connection, of making kids feel seen, mean everything to me.

Real Life, Real Grace

And yep... if you’ve been following my recent behind-the-scenes updates, this was the session where my dairy sensitivity reared its ugly head. But even that, as awkward as it could’ve been, was met with grace and understanding. These people are just good humans, and I feel lucky every time I walk through their front door.

Dante, by the way, is a little miracle. He had to be on oxygen for a few weeks due to Colorado’s high elevation and thinner air—so we waited a bit longer than usual to do his newborn session. But that just meant he was extra alert, full of sweet stretches and sleepy expressions that made the whole day feel even more magical.

Why Lifestyle Newborn Photography Matters

Whether you’re in Denver, Colorado Springs, or tucked away in one of the many mountain towns that make this state feel like a storybook, lifestyle newborn photography offers something that studio sessions just can’t replicate: home. Your pace. Your people. Your pets, even.

This Colorado in-home newborn session was a soft reminder that photography doesn’t have to be posed or perfect. It just needs to be real.

And this? This was real love.

Nathaniel Riley Opening for Oliver Hazard at the Fox

When my friend Nathaniel Riley opened for Oliver Hazard at the Fox Theater in Boulder, I knew I had to be there, not just as a concert photographer, but as someone who cares deeply about witnessing and honoring the moments that matter. This night was one of them. From the historic energy of the Fox to the quiet power of Nathaniel’s performance, it was an evening full of heart, presence, and soul.

Nathaniel’s new song Hands, born from a season of deep emotional struggle, created space for healing in that room. The stillness, the strength, the honesty, it was all there. I showed up to photograph not just the music, but the meaning behind it. This post is part reflection, part documentation, and all heart.

There’s something sacred about live music, the kind that’s stripped back and soul-deep, where the lyrics land heavy and the room leans in. As a concert photographer based in Colorado, I’ve photographed my fair share of shows, but the ones that stay with me are always the ones that mean something more. This night at the Fox Theater in Boulder? It was exactly that.

Watching Nathaniel Riley, a Fort Collins-based musician I’m lucky to call a friend, open for Oliver Hazard at the Fox Theater in Boulder was one of those slow-burning, quietly significant nights I won’t forget. It wasn’t about flashing lights or a big crowd (though the crowd was plenty and the lights were beautiful). It was about the why behind it. The moment in the moment. The “this matters” part.

Nathaniel and I met a couple of years ago, maybe 2022 or 2023, when I photographed a show for his friend, Joe Kaplow, another musician I admire. Joe was headlining that night at Lulu’s Upstairs when it was still up in Manitou Springs (it’s downtown now), and Nathaniel was the opener. We didn’t know each other then, but I remember how easy it was to see that he was the real deal. Not in the “trying to impress” kind of way, but in the quiet steadiness that tells you this person has stories worth hearing.

We stayed connected after that night. And when I saw he was opening for Oliver Hazard, a band I also happen to really love, I knew I wanted to be there. Not just to hear the music. But to document it. To hold the moment still for him, for his story, for his people. Because I knew what it meant. And I also knew what a gift it is to have someone show up and see you at a moment like this.

So I made the drive to Boulder and walked into the Fox Theater, one of my favorite music venues in Colorado. It’s a space built for listening, you know? A little nostalgic, a little grungy, and always full of heart.

The room filled slowly, the kind of buzz that builds with anticipation. And then Nathaniel stepped on stage, and the energy shifted. It wasn’t loud. It was intentional. Present. His set had this quiet intensity, like he was letting us borrow a piece of something he’d carried for a long time.

He played Hands, his newest release, a song written during what he called a “down in the dumps, too tired to talk kind of depression.” He shared more in a recent Instagram post (which, sweetly, featured one of the images I made for him that night):

“I remember sitting at the kitchen table while this song unfolded, reflecting on how hard it was to be anything for anyone when I hardly was feeling myself...

So the feeling of having to ‘show up’ every day is not always so easy when losing touch deeply within ourselves. Yet still, we show up, and for me, as hard as that can be sometimes, it also can be the very important first steps of healing.”

I felt that.
Deeply.

And I think the crowd did too. You could feel it in the stillness between chords. The kind of shared silence that tells you everyone is with you. Not out of politeness, but out of respect.

As a concert photographer, especially for these more intimate, heart-led shows, I’m not there to just capture a performance. I’m there to hold space with my camera. To catch the nuance, the weight in the shoulders, the flicker of connection, the way music pulls emotion out of the artist and hands it to the room. That’s what I try to document.

And this night? It gave me all of that and more.

I’m so grateful I got to be there, not just because it was a beautiful show, but because I got to give something back to someone whose music has moved me. I wanted Nathaniel to have images that reflect the weight and warmth of that night. Not just what it looked like, but what it felt like to stand in that light, in that moment, in that truth.

If you haven’t listened to Hands yet, please do. It’s soft and strong and everything in between.

And if you’re a musician, especially one writing from the marrow of real life, let’s work together.
I offer concert and live music photography in Colorado and beyond. From Boulder’s beloved Fox Theater to tucked-away mountain venues, I show up with my whole heart and a camera to match.

Let’s make something that lasts.

A Joyful Birthday Family Session in Denver, Colorado

Watching a family grow through the seasons of life is one of the greatest honors of this work. In this sunny Denver park session, I got to reconnect with a family I’ve photographed since their maternity days, and this time, we were celebrating Remi’s second birthday.

It was full of light, laughter, and the kind of real connection that makes my photographer heart melt. If you’re into heartfelt storytelling, wildflower toddlers, and golden hour goodness, you’re gonna want to click through.

There’s something sacred about watching a family grow, not just in size, but in love, in connection, in all the little in-between ways that don’t show up on a calendar.

As a Colorado Springs Family Photographer, one of my greatest joys is building relationships with families over time, being invited into their most tender seasons and capturing the real, raw, joyful stuff. And I’ve had the absolute honor of photographing Brittany and her sweet crew three times now. It started with their maternity session, all that belly-glowing anticipation. Then came the newborn snuggles, sleepy yawns, and that intoxicating quiet joy that only a new baby brings. And now, now, Remi is two. TWO! And friends, she is pure magic.

This latest family photography session in Denver felt like a full-circle moment. But not like a perfectly polished circle, more like a hand-drawn one, full of charm and personality and realness. The kind of circle that says, "We’ve lived a little since then, haven’t we?"

We met up in a Denver park I hadn’t explored before, and let me tell you, it gave me all the creative goosebumps. As a Colorado Family Photographer, I’m always looking for new pockets of beauty, and this spot was chef’s kiss. The golden light dancing through the tall grasses, the texture of the trees, the open sky? It felt like nature herself was singing a little birthday song just for Remi.

And oh my heart, the way this family shows up for each other. You can feel it in the way they laugh together, the way Remi runs back into her mama’s arms with total abandon, the way her grandparents look at her like she’s stardust and sunshine all rolled into one chubby-cheeked toddler.

I’ve gotta shout out Brittany, too, not just because she’s a warm, grounded, deeply loving mama, but because she recently relaunched her own developmental editing and copyediting business. She’s crazy talented, and if you’re a fellow creative looking for an editor who truly gets it, you can check out her work right here. She’s the kind of creative who lifts others up just by being herself.

Photographing families year after year like this? It’s the heartbeat of what I do. Whether you’re based in the foothills of the Rockies or taking a little birthday adventure up to Denver, I’m always down for documenting your story in a way that feels honest, emotive, and true. If you’re looking for a Colorado Springs Family Photographer or planning your own family photography session in Denver, know that I’m here to make it easy, meaningful, and fun, with just the right amount of chaos and giggles sprinkled in.

Remi, you are sunshine and sparkle and sass in the best way. Happy birthday, little wildflower. I can’t wait to see who you become.

Looking to press pause and soak up this season with your kids, whether you’ve got one wildly wonderful little human or a whole joyful crew under your roof? I’m here for the real, playful, deeply connected stuff. ✨

From sweet second birthdays to full-on sibling shenanigans, I’ll guide you through a family session that’s more like an adventure than a chore—and give you images that feel like home.

Make Your Family Photography Session an Adventure in Colorado Springs

Family photo sessions don’t have to feel stiff or forced. Imagine hiking through the stunning foothills of Colorado Springs, laughing, and connecting with your loved ones while I capture it all. This blog is all about turning your photography session into a true adventure, something that feels as natural as it looks.

I’ll share how you can choose the perfect spot, get your kids engaged in fun activities, and even let go of any expectations to simply enjoy the moment. It’s about more than just pictures; it’s about making memories that feel as real as the mountains around us. Curious? Keep reading to learn how we can turn your family session into a true adventure.

How to Make Your Family Session Feel Like an Adventure

Capturing authentic, adventurous family moments is at the heart of what I do as a Colorado Springs photographer. Family photography doesn’t have to feel stiff, posed, or stressful. In fact, the best sessions feel more like an adventure, where you and your kids get to explore, play, and just be. That’s when the magic happens. That’s when we capture the giggles, the wind in your hair, the way your child’s tiny hand fits in yours.

If the idea of a “photo session” makes you think of forced smiles and rigid poses, let me show you another way. Here’s how we can turn your family photos into an unforgettable experience.

Choose a Location That Sparks Joy

The backdrop for your session sets the tone, so let’s pick a place that feels like you. Love hiking as a family? Let’s wander a forest trail. Prefer barefoot beach days? Let’s chase the waves. Love cozy, at-home moments? We’ll turn your living room into the perfect storytelling space.

Pro tip: Choose a spot where your kids can run, explore, or interact naturally, it keeps the energy high and the stress low!

The backdrop of your session plays a pivotal role in setting the mood. As a seasoned Colorado family photographer, I've had the privilege of photographing all over the Front Range and into our beautiful mountains.

  • Garden of the Gods: Majestic red rock formations that provide a dramatic setting.

  • Palmer Park: Capture your family's essence against the backdrop of towering peaks.

  • Downtown Colorado Springs: Blend urban charm with family warmth.

  • “Up the Mountain”: Epic views and all the adventure you can handle.

Embrace Movement and Play

Adventure sessions work best when we lean into the real moments, the ones where your kids are twirling, running into your arms, or laughing at something silly. Instead of standing stiffly, we’ll play games, have tickle fights, or even play games.

Ideas to try during your session:
Running hand-in-hand through a field
Swinging your little one in the air
Exploring a creek or climbing over rocks
A piggyback ride that ends in a fit of giggles

Engage in Activities That Bring Out Genuine Emotions

Adventure sessions thrive on movement and authenticity. Whether it's:

  • Hiking the Foothills: Experience nature trails hand-in-hand.

  • Picnicking in Memorial Park: Relish simple joys amidst greenery.

  • Exploring Old Colorado City: Discover local art and history together (and maybe get an ice cream at OCC Creamery).

These activities foster natural interactions, leading to heartfelt photographs.

Dress Comfortably & Authentically

Forget the perfectly matched outfits and stiff collars, this is about feeling good. Flowy dresses, barefoot toes, cozy sweaters in the fall, your wardrobe should move with you and fit the adventure we’re creating. Earthy tones, soft fabrics, and layers always photograph beautifully.

Pro tip: Think about what you’d wear for a fun day outdoors, then elevate it just a little.

Your attire should complement the adventure and setting. Opt for:

  • Layered Clothing: Adapt to Colorado's varying climates.

  • Comfortable Footwear: Essential for exploring diverse terrains.

  • Neutral Tones with Pops of Color: Harmonize with natural surroundings.

Let Go of Perfection (The Best Moments Are Unscripted)

Your toddler may refuse to sit still. Your kid might have wild, messy hair from running through the wind. And guess what? That’s perfect. The best family photos aren’t about looking flawless, they’re about looking real. Some of the most breathtaking images come from the unexpected moments:

Your child wrapping their arms around you mid-run

Laughing so hard you forget the camera is there

A quiet moment between you and your partner, completely unposed

When you let go of the idea of the “perfect” photo, that’s when we capture the ones that make you feel.

The most memorable moments often arise spontaneously. As your dedicated Colorado Springs photographer, I've witnessed:

Children's Unfiltered Joy: Genuine laughter during unexpected antics.

Candid Family Interactions: Unposed embraces and shared glances.

Natural Environmental Portraits: Families immersed in the beauty of Colorado's landscapes.

These unplanned instances encapsulate your family's true essence.

Soak in the Moment, It’s More Than Just Photos

At the end of the day, this is about more than getting pictures, it’s about creating memories. Your session is a time to slow down, connect, and see your family through a new lens (literally!). I want you to leave feeling closer, more in love, and grateful for the people who mean the most to you.

Pro tip: Think of this as a family date, not a photoshoot. Bring a blanket for cuddles, pack some snacks, and enjoy the experience.

The essence of adventure photography lies in the journey, not just the images. Engage in:

  • Storytelling Sessions: Share tales during a family hike.

  • Interactive Games: Foster bonding and genuine expressions.

  • Mindful Moments: Pause to appreciate Colorado's serene vistas together.

This approach transforms the session into a cherished family memory.

Ready for an Adventure?

As a Colorado Springs photographer, I'm committed to crafting sessions the result in family photos that feel like you, full of warmth, love, and movement. Whether we’re chasing golden light in the mountains or cozying up at home, I’ll make sure you walk away with images that feel as magical as the moments themselves.

Let’s make it happen, reach out to book your family adventure session today!

A Family Full of Love, Connection & Adventure

Every time I photograph this family, it feels like catching up with old friends. They are so deeply connected, full of warmth, and always up for an adventure. It seems like every time we meet, there’s a new sweet addition to their crew, and watching their family grow has been such an honor.

For this session, we took our time exploring different areas of Brainard Lake. The kids ran through the trails and trees, twirled by the water, and snuggled into their parents as the sun set behind the mountains. There were so many sweet little in-between moments, tiny hands gripping mom’s dress, a soft hug by all, the boys making each other laugh as they tossed pebbles into the water. These are the moments that make family photography so special. Real moments. Real connection.

Making Your Family Session Effortless & Fun

I get it, family photos can feel overwhelming. What do we wear? What if the kids won’t cooperate? How do we make it feel natural? But here’s the thing: you don’t have to worry about a thing.

I’ll send you a prep guide to help with outfits, timing, and making sure you feel totally ready.

I’ll guide you through natural, fun prompts that bring out genuine moments.

Generational Family Session at Red Rock Canyon Open Space

I’ve had the privilege of photographing Allison and Max’s family through some major milestones, from their wedding to welcoming their daughter, Rylee. This session, though, was extra special as we celebrated Rylee’s second birthday with her grandparents visiting from out of town. Red Rock Canyon Open Space set the perfect backdrop for capturing these sweet family moments, as Rylee explored and shared love with her parents and grandparents.

There’s something magical about multi-generational sessions, and this one was full of beautiful memories. From seeing the family grow over the years to witnessing Rylee’s sweet connection with her family, every moment was filled with love and joy. Keep reading to see how we created a space for Rylee to shine, even when she was feeling a little overwhelmed by so many loved ones around.

There are just some families that feel like old friends. You know what I mean? The kind where you show up with your camera, and it feels less like work and more like catching up, with a little lens in between. That’s exactly how it is with Allison, Max, and now their sweet girl, Rylee.

From Just the Two of Them to a Family of Three

I met Allison and Max right after they tied the knot, and we did this dreamy little session tucked away in Cheyenne Canon, surrounded by the wild Colorado beauty that just fits them. It’s been such a gift watching their story unfold, especially when I got to document their journey into parenthood.

From their maternity session to those sweet, sleepy newborn days with Rylee, I’ve been lucky enough to freeze time for them. And now? Somehow, we’re already here. Celebrating Rylee’s second birthday. (I know. Don’t even get me started—time is a thief.)

Celebrating Rylee’s 2nd Birthday with Family at Red Rock Canyon Open Space

This session was extra special because it wasn’t just the three of them. Max’s parents, his dad and stepmom and his mom, all came into town to celebrate Rylee turning two. And y’all, what better way to mark the occasion than gathering everyone at Red Rock Canyon Open Space for a family session?

If you haven’t been, Red Rock Canyon is one of those spots that screams Colorado Springs, red rocks towering over winding trails, open skies, and mountain views that honestly never get old. It’s perfect for extended family photos because there’s room to roam (and let’s be real, toddlers need to roam).

Real Life Moments, Because Toddlers Are Gonna Toddler

Rylee showed up exactly how two-year-olds do, with all the big feelings. Being the center of attention with so many people around felt a little overwhelming at first. But honestly? That’s where the magic happens.

Instead of forcing anything, we let Rylee set the pace. We created space for her to explore, snuggle her mom and dad when she needed that safe spot, and slowly warm up to having everyone around. What we captured wasn’t just posed smiles, but the real moments. The way she clung to her mama. The way Max kept cracking jokes to pull a giggle out of her. The way everyone lit up just watching her be her wild, beautiful little self.

A Target Run, a Birthday Surprise, and the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo

Funny enough, I actually ran into Allison, Max, Rylee, and Max’s mom at Target just a few days before our session. (Because where else does all of Colorado Springs bump into each other, right?) It happened to be Rylee’s actual birthday, and they were headed to the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, one of the absolute best spots in town for a birthday adventure.

If you’ve never been, that zoo is such a gem. Set right up against the mountains, it’s got views for days, and honestly, the giraffe feeding deck is reason enough to go. I ended up slipping Rylee five bucks to buy lettuce for those giraffes (because obviously feeding giraffes on your birthday is a rite of passage, right?).

Word on the street is they’re opening a new exhibit next year, so if you’re visiting or local, it’s definitely worth checking out.

Why Extended Family Sessions Matter

This session was such a good reminder of why I love extended family shoots. These moments don’t happen all the time, family flying in, grandparents seeing their grandbaby turn two, the whole crew gathered in one of the prettiest spots Colorado Springs has to offer.

Photographs like these? They’re heirlooms. They’re the kind of images that get pulled out years down the road, the kind Rylee will show her babies one day. And it’s such an honor to be the one to tell that story.

Ready to Book Your Own Family Session?

If you’re dreaming of capturing your own family’s story, whether it’s just your little crew or the whole extended family, I’d love to be the one behind the camera.

Whether we’re wandering through Red Rock Canyon Open Space, exploring the trails at Cheyenne Canyon, or chasing giraffes at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo, let’s make some magic together.

A Sun-Soaked Maternity Session in the Colorado Mountains

Some families become more than just clients, they become part of my journey, just as I become part of theirs. I’ve had the absolute honor of photographing Laura and David through so many of life’s sweetest seasons, from their first maternity session with Liv to her newborn days, and now, as they prepare to welcome their baby boy. This golden, sun-soaked session in the Colorado mountains was a celebration of love, growth, and the beautiful transitions of family life.

Documenting families as they evolve is one of the greatest joys of my work. There’s something magical about capturing not just the milestones, but the quiet, in-between moments, the way a big sister waits with excitement, the way two parents hold each other with the deep knowing of what’s to come. I can’t wait to step into their home again soon for their newborn session, capturing the next chapter in their story.

A Growing Love Story: Laura, David & Liv

Some families just feel like home. That’s exactly how it feels every time I step into a session with Laura and David. We’ve been on this journey together since they were expecting their daughter, Liv, and now, years later, we’re celebrating the arrival of their newest little love, a baby boy, due any day now.

From their first maternity session at Garden of the Gods to their sun-drenched family session last year in the mountains, each moment has been filled with so much warmth and connection. This most recent maternity session, once again up in the mountains near their home, was no exception. It was golden, peaceful, and filled with the kind of love that makes you slow down and soak it all in.

Following Families As They Grow

There’s something incredibly special about documenting a family’s story over the years. I’ve watched Laura and David step into parenthood with such grace, capturing Liv’s newborn session in the comfort of their home and later seeing her grow into the most joyful, adventurous little girl. Now, as they prepare to welcome their son, I can’t help but feel honored to be part of this next chapter.

Maternity sessions like this remind me why I love what I do. They’re not just about the baby bump; they’re about the journey, the deep love between partners, the excitement of a sibling waiting to meet their baby brother, and the quiet, tender moments before life changes in the most beautiful way.

An Invitation Into a Family’s Most Sacred Space

One of the greatest honors in my work is being invited into a family’s home during those early newborn days. I’ll be photographing Laura and David’s in-home newborn session soon, and I already know it’s going to be filled with all the sweetness that comes with welcoming a new baby.

Laura and I had an instant connection from the beginning, but I knew we were kindred spirits when I noticed a beautiful piece of art in their home during Liv’s newborn session. When I commented on it, she told me she had found it on the side of the road in New York, my kind of gal! Those little moments, the things that make each family uniquely them, are what make these sessions so incredibly meaningful.

Ready to Document Your Family’s Journey?

If you’re expecting a little one and want more than just a maternity session, if you want to document your growing family in a way that feels natural, connected, and deeply personal, I would love to be the one to tell your story. Whether it’s a sun-soaked maternity session, a cozy in-home newborn session, or capturing your family’s milestones as the years pass, I’m here for all of it.

Let’s create something beautiful together. Reach out to book your Colorado maternity or newborn session today!

Lizette & Alex's Mountain Wedding at Younger Ranch

Lizette and Alex’s wedding at Younger Ranch in Colorado Springs was a day full of love, laughter, and unforgettable moments. Surrounded by stunning mountain views and the breathtaking beauty of Pikes Peak, their celebration was a perfect reflection of who they are, joyful, full of life, and deeply connected. From their intimate ceremony to the late-night NYC-style pizza and fireworks sendoff, every detail was carefully planned to create a memorable experience for their loved ones who traveled from California to be with them.

As a Colorado wedding photographer, it was an absolute dream to capture this beautiful couple’s story in such a picturesque location. The venue, with its rustic charm and sweeping views, provided the perfect backdrop for Lizette and Alex’s day. Every moment was filled with emotion, and it was a true honor to be part of their journey. Whether you’re planning a grand celebration or an intimate gathering, Younger Ranch offers an unforgettable setting for your wedding day, and I’d love to help tell your unique love story here too.

I’ve been sitting on this one for a little while, trying to find the right words to convey the depth of love and beauty from Lizette and Alex’s incredible wedding at Younger Ranch on May 28, 2023. I owe them this blog post, as each of my weddings and couples deserves to be honored, and their day was a story of love, community, and breathtaking views that I’ll forever hold close. So here I am, catching up, and so grateful to finally share this beautiful celebration with you all.

The Stunning Venue: Younger Ranch

Nestled in the rolling meadows of Colorado Springs, Younger Ranch was the perfect backdrop for Lizette and Alex’s wedding day. A venue with such rich history, dating back to 1914, its rustic charm, breathtaking views of Pikes Peak, and sweeping fields truly made it a place where memories were made. If you’ve ever dreamed of having your wedding on a mountain ranch wedding venue with an authentic, natural beauty, this place delivers in ways you can’t imagine. The ceremony site, surrounded by tall grasses and an iconic wooden arch, felt like the perfect little slice of nature, with the mountains looming majestically in the distance. It’s a place where love feels as grand as the views, yet as intimate as the hearts of the people it’s bringing together.

California Transplants, A Wedding Like No Other

Lizette and Alex, originally from California, brought a touch of West Coast flair to their Colorado wedding, and I absolutely loved how they blended their unique styles. Many of their friends and family traveled all the way from California to celebrate with them, making their wedding even more special. You could feel the joy and excitement in the air as everyone came together, and the love they shared with their guests was palpable.

For the guys? A teepee was set up as their personal hangout spot to get ready in, filled with all the good vibes you’d expect. Lizette, on the other hand, had a gorgeous private suite right near the reception space where she could relax, enjoy the moments leading up to the ceremony, and take in the beauty around her. Every detail had been thoughtfully planned and it was evident that every part of their day was about creating a meaningful experience for those closest to them.

A Day Full of Beautiful Details

The amazing J'Loren + Co. Events did a stellar job bringing Lizette and Alex's vision to life, ensuring every detail flowed seamlessly. From the cozy teepee for the guys to the sparkling sunset, everything had a touch of magic. Lizette's dress, from Bridal Elegance Studio in Torrance, California, was the perfect fit for her. It had a timeless yet modern feel that matched her graceful beauty perfectly.

And of course, what's a wedding celebration without food? Lizette and Alex treated their guests to NYC-style late-night pizza from Joey’s, which was an absolute hit and a fun twist on the usual wedding fare. But it was the grand finale, a firework sendoff, albeit small, just in the doorway, that had everyone talking. A little spark of excitement in the night sky that wrapped up an unforgettable day.

A Photographer’s Dream: Capturing the Moments

As a Colorado wedding photographer, there's something extra special about a venue like Younger Ranch. From the rustic barns to the sprawling meadows and the amazing view of Pikes Peak, every corner of the venue felt like a perfect canvas. Lizette and Alex’s golden-hour portraits were nothing short of stunning, with the sun casting a warm glow over them as they stood in the middle of this gorgeous Colorado landscape.

The evening sky turned into a masterpiece, a Colorado sunset that is impossible to describe fully, but let’s just say it was TO DIE FOR. Every shot I took felt like a little piece of magic, capturing the connection between Lizette and Alex and the stunning scenery surrounding them.

Why Younger Ranch Should Be on Your Radar

If you’re dreaming of a mountain ranch wedding with the perfect balance of rustic charm and natural beauty, Younger Ranch should absolutely be at the top of your list. The views of Pikes Peak alone are enough to make your heart skip a beat, and the combination of the historic ranch setting with the stunning mountain backdrop is something every couple dreams of. It’s a venue that offers endless possibilities for your wedding day, whether you’re looking for intimate moments or grand celebrations.

Having been fortunate enough to photograph a wedding there, I can say from the bottom of my heart, this venue is a dream. The vibe is casual yet elegant, the scenery is out of this world, and it offers such a variety of places for beautiful, memorable photos. Plus, it’s Colorado Springs central, so it’s easy for your guests to travel to and from, and you get the best of both worlds: close to the city but completely immersed in nature.

A special shoutout to the amazing Candace Woods of Woods + The Wild, who officiated Lizette and Alex’s ceremony. I’ve had the pleasure of working with Candance on several weddings, and let me tell you, she is an absolute gem. Her warmth, authenticity, and genuine connection with each couple she works with make her one of the best officiants around. Candace has this incredible ability to bring a personal touch to every ceremony, making each one feel intimate and meaningful. Lizette and Alex’s ceremony was no exception, filled with laughter, emotion, and beautiful words that perfectly captured the essence of their love story. It’s always a joy to collaborate with such a talented and kind-hearted person, and I’m so grateful she was part of this magical day.

John Craigie at The Lariat: A Colorado Concert Experience

Join me as I take you behind the lens of a Colorado concert photographer capturing the magic of John Craigie’s performance at The Lariat in Buena Vista. This intimate venue was the perfect setting for John’s soulful storytelling, where his music resonated in ways that only live performances can. Through my lens, I share not only the energy of the night but also the journey that led to this unforgettable moment, from rafting on the Tuolumne River to a secret music performance in an old mining shaft.

As a photographer, I find inspiration in every corner of life, and John’s music has been a guiding force in my creative journey. This post celebrates how concert photography fuels my passion and keeps my creative cup full, while also offering insight into how live music and storytelling through photography are so deeply connected. If you’re passionate about music, adventure, and photography, come along for the ride and experience these moments through my eyes.

John Craigie gearing up to play his show with Glenn Phillips at The Lariat in Buena Vista, Colorado.

As a Colorado concert photographer, I’ve had the privilege of capturing some incredible live performances, but there was something about seeing John Craigie at The Lariat in Buena Vista, Colorado, that felt extra special. The small bar atmosphere, the intimate stage, it was the perfect setting for an artist whose words hit you right in the gut.

The Music That Heals

There are some artists that feel like home the first time you hear them, like a melody you’ve known forever, even if you just stumbled across it. John Craigie is that artist for me. His words bring you up from the depth of your being, in the best possible way, reaching into places you didn’t even know needed healing.

When I first heard I Am California, a song he recorded with Gregory Alan Isakov, I felt something shift. That song was my introduction to John, and since then, I’ve been lost in the soul of the boy from Oregon, following his music like a thread through some of the most transformative moments of my life.

So when I had the chance to photograph his show at The Lariat in Buena Vista, Colorado, it felt like a full-circle moment.

The Lariat: A Venue With Soul

The Lariat is one of those small, intimate venues that makes every show feel like it’s just for you. The kind of place where the stage is close enough to touch, and the music soaks into the walls, lingering long after the night is over. It was the perfect setting for John’s storytelling magic, his songs, his humor, the way he weaves in and out of melody and conversation like an old friend spinning tales around a campfire.

Standing there with my camera, capturing the energy of the room, I couldn’t help but think about how this moment all started months ago, on the Tuolumne River in California.

A River, A Raft, and a Musician With a Bucket of Water

Last summer, I joined John and a small group of adventurers on one of his annual rafting trips with ARTA River Trips. It was my first time rafting, and I won’t lie, I was a little nervous. But with an incredible guide, I found my rhythm on the water. We spent three days floating through wild, untouched beauty, and two nights sleeping under a sky dusted with stars, the sound of the river lulling us to sleep.

Each night, John played an intimate set for our tiny crew, his voice blending with the crackle of the fire and the whisper of the water. There’s something about music in a setting like that, stripped down, raw, real, that connects people in a way nothing else can.

Some of my favorite memories from that trip? John becoming my “water boy” for a moment, tossing buckets of water onto a flipped raft so I could slide into the river. And the time we hiked and swam up a mountain stream, some of the group daring to dive off cliffs into the deep, hidden swimming hole we found tucked into the rock.

But the most unforgettable moment?

One afternoon, we took a hike up to an old mining shaft. We knew that was our destination, but what we didn’t know was that John had gotten there before us. As we stepped inside, string lights and candles flickered against the rough stone walls, and suddenly, music. His voice carried through the dark space as he played Nomads at the far end of the shaft, waiting for us.

We all piled in, sinking into the moment, the sound of his voice echoing off the stone. It felt sacred, like we had stumbled into something we weren’t meant to witness but were so lucky to be part of. (Spoiler alert for future rafters, I hear he does this on every trip. But even knowing that, I promise, it won’t make it any less magical.)

At the end of that rafting trip, I mentioned to John that I was a photographer and would love to capture one of his shows when he came through Colorado. Fast forward to this night at The Lariat, and there I was, camera in hand, documenting a musician whose work had carried me through some of my hardest and most transformative years.

The Art of Keeping My Cup Full

Being a live concert photographer fills my creative cup in a way that keeps me inspired for the work I do with families and couples. There’s something about capturing raw emotion—whether it’s the energy of a crowd singing in unison or the quiet, intimate moments between loved ones, that keeps my passion alive. Exploring different styles of Colorado photography allows me to bring fresh artistic inspiration to my clients, ensuring their images feel as vibrant and storytelling-driven as the moments I capture on stage. Concert photography is one of the ways I do that. It lets me step into a different creative space, chase light and movement, and be fully present in the energy of live music.

Find What Fills You

This experience reminded me how important it is to pursue the things that set your soul on fire. Whether it’s music, art, adventure, or something else entirely, find the thing that makes you feel alive and make time for it. Because when we give ourselves space to be inspired, we have so much more to offer the world.

If you haven’t listened to John Craigie yet, do yourself a favor, start with I Am California, then let yourself fall down the rabbit hole of his discography. And if you ever have the chance to see him live, take it.

Why Music and Photography Go Hand in Hand

Music freezes moments in time, just like photography. A song can take you back to a feeling, a place, a season of life, and so can an image. Whether I’m capturing a concert event or a family session bathed in golden-hour light, my goal is the same: to tell a story that brings you right back to the heart of that moment.

Ready to Capture Your Story?

If you’re looking for a Colorado concert photographer or someone to document the raw, unfiltered love in your life, I’d love to connect. Whether it’s a live show, a couples session, or a family adventure, let’s create something unforgettable together. Want to follow along as I chase creativity through photography, music, and wild adventures? Let’s connect.
